On June 5th and 6th, we attended the Homeschool Iowa (HI) Conference in Des Moines, and then we were in Indianapolis for the Midwest Homeschool Conference on June 13th, hosted at Ivy Tech. In between, we were able to enjoy the beauty of the Midwest (pro tip: if you take trail #3 at Turkey Run State Park, follow the trail to the left after the suspension bridge instead of the right if you want to go up the ladders; but also take seriously the classification of “very rugged”!).

A major topic of conversation for people stopping by the Scholaright booth was transcripts. New and experienced homeschoolers alike wanted to know if colleges accept homeschool transcripts, college admissions reps spoke about how they didn’t have resources to guide homeschool families, some folks said they knew transcripts were important but didn’t know where to start, and there were questions about what even needs to be on a transcript. We’ve combined research plus our own experience working in college admissions with homeschoolers and their transcripts, to make a simple and comprehensive tool to help people assemble the information they need.

To answer the first question: we have yet to find a college or university that does not accept homeschool transcripts. Even large universities like the University of Michigan and Indiana University encourage homeschoolers to apply. However, they each have their own criteria, such as specific subjects, credits, and standardized tests. So always be sure to check with the colleges and universities your student is interested in to help guide your education decisions. This is also why it’s a good idea not to wait until graduation day to start thinking about records and transcripts. Scholaright is designed to help you on your homeschool journey from pre-k all the way through high school (see how Scholaright helps beyond just grades).

When you keep your records in Scholaright and the time comes to generate your student’s transcripts, you get all of this:

The option to group courses by year or subject

A customizable GPA key

Weighting options for dual enrollment and honors courses

Optional standardized test results

Customizable school years and grade levels to include

GPA options for pass/fail courses

A unique student ID number created automatically by Scholaright (or bring your own student ID)

Optional honors, such as a homeschool honor society, etc.

The ability to print, download a PDF, or share your transcript securely with Scholaright Verify

Scholaright uses common standards by default, but you can choose to customize options like GPA rules, weighting, and more to fit your school. We also provide co-curricular transcripts when you track extracurricular activities in Scholaright.

If you ever find that you need something Scholaright doesn’t provide on a transcript, contact us and let us know. We are always ready to hear how Scholaright can serve you better.

Another common topic was how Scholaright can work with groups, like co-ops and microschools. We have been developing our group plan features for several months. With the questions and feedback we received on the road, we chose to wrap up the remaining pieces and made the group plan available last week! With a group plan, school administrators can invite more admins and teachers than on the standard family plan, enroll up to 250 students, invite parents to see their students’ grades at no extra cost, and more. And when the parents you invite are Scholaright members with their own homeschool, their students’ group courses will also show up in their homeschool’s course list and transcripts (but only the group school’s admins and teachers can change the students’ grades). Learn more about working with Scholaright’s group plan and check out a 30-day free trial.

The common thread weaving its way through all of these conversations was that people have questions and want help keeping track of their homeschool progress. That’s exactly why we built Scholaright.
