Autumn: Time for Apples, Caramel, and Transcripts

Crab apples on the ground and gathered in pails

Just last Sunday, I enjoyed a treat of sliced apples with a creamy, seasoned caramel dip. I turned to the man who crafted it and remarked simply, “This tastes like Fall.”

Yes, it’s the time when in some climates, we bid farewell to sandy beaches, but are consoled by the beauty, fragrances, and tastes of Autumn. It’s also the time when many of our students have begun their final year before heading off to college or whatever comes next. For us parents, that means it’s time for transcripts.

Transcripts can be a complicated topic with many difficult questions. What should be included? Will colleges accept a homeschool transcript (the answer is generally yes, but be sure to check with your student’s prospective colleges)? How do I calculate a GPA? But it doesn’t have to be as complicated as it sounds. There are many tools and guides online to help. Tools like Scholaright pull your academic records together and produce an official transcript in seconds. Learn more on our tutorials page, where you can see how to go from your first grade entry to a full transcript in just over three minutes.

Of course, there is the conundrum: how do you print a transcript that includes your student’s Senior year when they haven’t completed it yet. You will want to double-check with the colleges your student is considering, but there are generally two options:

  1. Send the transcript listing the courses and credits they intend to take in their Senior year
  2. Send the transcript listing the courses with their grades thus far, or through the first quarter or term

Some colleges will want both: a transcript with the listed courses your student intends to take for the initial application, and then another submission after the first marking period. An admissions rep can help you know what you need to do. The good news is, Scholaright can handle all of this. By default, Scholaright includes in-progress years (i.e.: your student’s Senior year) along with grades through the first quarter or semester (depending on how you setup your school). But, as with so many things with Scholaright, you can customize this to fit your needs:

The traditional methods for submitting a transcript to a school include printing it and sending a PDF through email. Scholaright provides you with the ability to do both. Some colleges have also moved to requiring more secure methods of electronic submission. Scholaright Verify makes this easy, too. Just enter an email address to share with and they will receive a verifiable tamper-resistant transcript.
